the faux curly pudding experiment - v1

ETA:: *APPLAUSE* to all the "Curve Salon customers" who keep perusing my site, and adding their testimonials for Curve Salon's services and products - congratulations. I'm so glad that your experience at Curve was pleasant, and that you're completely satisfied with their products. Good for you. However, as your thinly veiled endorsements have proven your inability to read, let me clarify something. I am not, and probably (considering how asinine these comments keep getting) will never be a Curve customer. Your "testimonials" (which I believe are just Curve's owners attempts to drive more business to their site) ring false, and since I clearly stated in the original post - this was an attempt tp recreate Curly Pudding, not use of the actual product. Having read all the comments posted here, I'm convinced - overspending on Salon service & products tends to make women functionally illiterate and obsessed with said product & services. Now...back to the original post...
ok, so I kept hearing about this gel that "brings out the curl pattern in natural hair". Saw a blurb about this in Essence, and heard about it on NP. Now, I love my napps, but I was looking for a wash & go style, that would mimic the braidouts I like - without having to braid every couple of days. So I figured this was worth a shot.
However, I am a skeptic. $28 buck is a lot for some gel, without knowing whether it was worth it. I also had thoughts of Rio perms and no-damage flat-irons in mind. So I was surfing Nappturality (NP) and came across this recipe:
curl activator + aloe vera gel + essential oil = faux curly pudding.
Still skeptical, I waited until someone who'd tried it really broke that formula down.
holding gel + moisture + shine = voila!
Since that made sense, and the ingredients were non-damaging, easy to find and cheap, I figured it was worth a shot. So, I gathered all the stuff, and since my hair was already stretched from some week old flat-twists, I wet my hair and applied the faux pudding according to the kinks to curls instructions.
so - pics of the results are on flickr - click the pic above to access them. Meanwhile, I was ok with the results. It was a lil greasy for my tastes, and I think that the resultant "curl pattern" was due more to my week-old twists, than the pudding.
moral: try before you buy - I'm glad I did. And learn to love the naps, so you don't give away your $$$ for naught. kinks to curls indeed...lol.
Note to any additional Curve customers wanting to post an "endorsement":: Since the point was already "made", and I control comments here, I'm no longer approving these "endorsements". Please note the sarcasm in the comment above - I won't let my site be a free advertisement for Curve.

I like the information you were all talking about here. Thanks for that curly pudding recipe, I'd like to try those mentioned. About the Curly Pudding from Miss Jessie's.com website: ladies, it does not change your hair texture, it is just a styling product. After reading a lot on some other black hair care sites over the past four years, Curve Salon also provides another service for those with tighter hair like mine 4b I think it is called: a texturizer they use on customer to loosen the curl and THEN they use the curly pudding and other stuff. I think the Curly Pudding by itself works better for those with a looser curl. Believe me, after two jars, I found that it just is a nice smelling styling product. Smells good, dries a little crispy, and it will hold your curl pattern a few days, but that is mainly due to one doing twists and braidouts: it just holds it there longer and nicer with the pudding. However, after I'd used 2 jars, I found out the price went up to $48. $28 was a stretch belive me, but I just can't afford it at all now. I also read on other two sites awhile ago that if you want to use the Naturalaxer product, make absolutely sure it is BAKA NATURALAXER that they sell on the TreasuredLocks.com website, not the other website (I think African Wonders.) Supposedly women who'd tried it found out it worked, but the African Wonders product does have a small amount of chemical substance in it to texturize your hair to a better curl pattern. If that is cool with than it still is probably less harsh than a regular chemical perm. I will hopefully report back to about the Baka Naturalaxer if it's helpful to anyone. That one is all herbal ingredients in the Naturalaxer and also in the Sahara Clay that also is mixed in for the Naturalaxer Plus product. Good luck to everyone: I'm sticking with natural and no chemicals because I straightened my black hair for 26 years.

They are not going to tell you everything that is in there otherwise it will have a fake version out. By the way you have to pay ten dollars more now for all of their products now. Up ten dollars!

Just found this conversation. I live in the Uk, in London. Yesterday I was elated that I found the Curve Salon on the web and was even contemplating a visit to the USA to get my hair done in New York at Easter - now I think that I will make up a recipe - my own version of curl pudding based on the great ingredients list and give it a try on my natural hair - the world wide web is truly wonderful thing - I will try this over the half term break - I am a teacher so I will do this whilst I am not at school - Love your thoughts and conversation - by the way To teal or not to Teal - I like the light shade myself.

I go to curve-salon in NYC and I must say I am really pleased with the products, service and customer serivce. The prices are more that what I pay for services in Atlanta, however, they are comparable to high-end salons in NYC. The CP is really great but you have to know how to use it or you can use too much....the staff at curve is usally really great about answering any questions about the product over the phone...

I have noticed your post and I was going to actually purchase curly pudding. I have frizz curly hair. For years I have been mixing curl activator and frizz-ease together to get that curly look and take the frizz out.

Hey!
Just wanted to let you know we tried the real Curly Pudding from missjessies.com just last night. And it worked. We were very skeptical too. It's worth the money. It took 2 of us to apply it on our sister's hair though. Think of it this way, it's basically a "set" for natural hair. We looked at your pics, and we think you might getter better results with the CP stuff. I'm trying to grow my relaxer out so my sister's results inspired me. What we don't know yet is how it well hold up if you work out etc... Thanks for your info and pics.

@nadia - it was actually ME who made the jheri curl comment, about my own hair. The way this page is formatted:

and I must be fortunate, I've got several natural hair salons that have been doing their thing for a LONG time (predating Curve), within 10 miles of my house. I also know quite a few people who do hair on their own.
No, I'm not familiar with naturalaxer, since I'm focused on wearing my hair natural, without any type of relaxer. However, despite the plant extract, you may want to check the ingredients, since it probably still contains the lye (calcium or sodium hydrxide) that is so drying & damaging to hair.
You may want to join, read, post or just lurk on NP, because there's tons of information there, about recipes like the curly pudding one I posted, and other products, as well as tips, styles, etc.

Actually it was someone on the sight called "princessdominique" who called it a dry jerri-curl. However she is entitled to her own opinion, i just think it is a good idea that natural hair salons is finally popping up. I am not trying to critique anyone in any shape or form. However i've been actually trying to obtain this recipee for the "curly pudding", because i refuse to purchase it because it is too overpriced. I've tried to make appointments with the salon on several occasions, however it so busy you have to make an appointment 1 month to six weeks in advance. Therefore am going to try the faux version, it makes a whole lot of sense. Have you ever tried the naturalaxer, it is a plant extract which claims to relax and soften your hair pattern after 3 applications. Thanks...

@ nadia - I see google is sending many folks my way about this curly pudding thing. While I appreciate the traffic, and I know you're new to my site, I think you missed a few things:
...I'm beginning to think Curve staffers are lurking here, goodness...A) I'm in Atlanta, and there isn't a Curve salon within a 900 mile radius
B) I clearly stated, several times in this post, that I used the RECIPE to create a FAUX (meaning fake) version of the Curly Pudding.
C) My comments in no way shape or form should reflect on the service or products offered by Curve salon, since I'VE NEVER STEPPED INTO THAT SALON IN MY LIFE. So suggesting I'm bashing Curve is a bit much...
D) reading really is fundamental... you may want to reread this post, to verify that you read what you thought you read. I don't see anything in this to indicate what you mentioned.
No offense, but I wanted to clarify that for anyone else Google may send here that's skimming my site. Although the information is clearly there, I'm not sure ppl are reading it. That is all...please return to your regularly scheduled surfing.

I am glad that at least Curve-salon is trying to cater for women of color hair. Plese don't bash and call it a 'dry jerri curl', it's better than a wet one with all those chemicals.
However they're too expensive $75 consultation non-refundable + the cost of the style.
I actually like the look, thanks alot for the recipee, you all are funny.

I got the recipe on Nappturality.com, in the following forum:
Quick Fix - Fast & Easy Qurly Pudding.
The basic ingredients were:
Obtain any curl activator gel
add 3 ounces of your favorite oil
add 4 oz. of Fruit of the Earth Vitamin E oil gel
add any essential oil fragrance to your liking
whip/mix let sit about 5 minutes
The Aloe Gel is a substitute for the Vitamin E Gel, and it's the kind from the health food store (not hair gel. You can find other substitutes on NP.

Hi Saga.
Wondered about your faux curly pudding recipe. When you say "aloe vera gel" did you mean the natural aloo vera that comes in "gel" form that you buy out of the natural food store? (The kind that you put on your skin and on wounds?) Or did you mean a clear "hair gel" with "aloe vera" IN it?
Posted by: CurlyKay | May 16, 2005 03:01 PM
@Wanna - I haven't used a perm in over 5 years. I did my big chop in 2001, and have had several cuts after that - I'm POSITIVE I don't have any relaxer left in my hair. As for the comment about cheap oils, both oils I used were 100% pure, from my local Health Food Store. Frankly, I just don't think either version - real or pseudo pudding, will work on my 4b/c hair. I'll stick to twist/braidouts, and my freeform fro. Thanks anyway, though.

DO you have a relaxer in your hair? Curly pudding is supposed to also elongate the curl, and take the kink out..I have type 3c/4a....and the curls are crazy, but 28 bucks is steep, especially when the ingrediants for curly pudding are :purified water, veg glycerin, aloe vera gel, carbomer, tocopherol acetate, sweet almond oil, milk protein, vitamin e, panthenol, pectin, sweet orange oil extract, fragrance, fd&c red 3, fd&c blue 1....the thing is, these ingrediants can be found in many gels, icp styling gel has the same ingredients except it has wheat protein..so I dont know what is in this pudding that makes it special bc IC gel doesnt do anything great for me...the ingredients for the pudding seems to be gel and a whole bunch of oils and aloe vera gel., maybe it the right amount of each item?..Also....i noticed the oils you are using, steer clear of that cheap stuff, go to the Vitamin shop and get the real deal, real jojoba, real shea...real whatever oil you need. I get my olive from the grocery store....the stuff inthe beauty supply is rarely pure....Anyway, im going on and on..but i need a pudding that works!

Gurl, that was definitely from those flat twists you just took out of your hair!
"LOL* You did have me cracking up when you said that it made you think about Rio because when I started reading, I thought,"Uh oh....RIO!!!"
Wasn't that a hot mess back then? I wonder if an of those women grew their hair back!
But you did do a good job on grabbing those products and giving it a try! Big ups to you!!! When you find the right combination, patent it and then you'll have enough money to have someone else hook you up! Smooches! ~ Ms. Blaize
