the end of an era
notice anything different?
yep, that's permanent. as in perm. my hair is no longer natural (although it is all mine).
Y, U ask? The natural look wasn't doing much for me. Don't get it twisted, I like the look, feel, weight etc. of nappy hair, in general. And I rocked some fierce nappy styles, no doubt. But overall, it wasn't working for me anymore.
So, that pic above is my look, for now. Now being indefinitely. And while I do take the hair wars that seriously, and intimately understand how big a deal it is/was for me to be nappy, I did what I had to do as a natural haired woman. And I don't feel like I have anything to prove to anyone. No sell-outs here - it's a personal choice.
...but I'm sure this will inspire some interesting conversations at theGig. Stay tuned.

@ all of y'all - THANKS! I really wasn't expecting so much positive feeback, so I do appreciate it!
@jen - this response is Panama length - oh well:
* I went to a salon, and the stylist does both (natural and permed hair). She's been my stylist for a while.
* I didn't see much of a loss Actually, both the stylist and I were surprised, because I've done some dramatic colors in the last 6 months. She cut off two inches, to give me a style, and get rid of split ends.
* I've been nappy for 8 years, and transitioned for about a year.
* I struggled with my length for the last year or so. I was wearing a lot of 'out' styles (twist-outs and braid-outs), which often left my hair tangled, and it was shedding (knotting, etc). But also, I wasn't satisfied with the way the longer hair looked on me. I love long nappy hair on other folks, but the length made my hair wilder, and it was growing out, instead of down. I wasn't happy with other styling options either. It just wasn't flattering on me, and I felt I had two options: cut it short, or press it. I pressed it for 3 weeks, liked the look, but it shed badly. Hence, the perm.
I honestly don't want to sway anyone much either way (encourage or discourage) because hair matters are so IMPORTANT IMHO. For me, it's been as much about self-empowerment and embracing my natural beauty, as it has been about not conforming. At the end of the day though, it's also about what I see when I look in the mirror, and empowering myself to choose the reflection I want to see. Nappy or straight.
